Apprenticeship Employer Incentive

Apprenticeship Employer Incentive

This incentive offers financial support for SMEs in Wales to recruit individuals aged 16 to 19 into full-time employment through the apprenticeship programme.

In order to encourage recruitment at the point of educational transition, there will be a higher rate of support for apprentices recruited during July-October and January-March.

Apprentices who are recruited during July-October and January-March could attract £3,500; with all other apprentices attracting £2,500.

Employers may be eligible for support for up to three apprentices.

The support is available for apprenticeship starts from 1st August 2017.

Employer Incentive Eligibility
Employers will be eligible for the incentive if they meet all of these criteria:

  • not had an employee start an apprenticeship in the 30 month period before the start date of the first apprentice for whom you apply for the grant
  • employ the apprentice for at least 30 hours per week
  • not able to recruit an apprentice without the grant
  • based in Wales with fewer than 250 employees
  • commits to employing the apprentice for at least 12 months to complete the apprenticeship programme.
  • pay the apprentice in line with legal minimum requirements or more.

Payment Process
Employers will be eligible to receive the incentive payment once the apprentice has been in-learning for 8 months.

The payment will be made by Welsh Government directly to the training provider who in turn will pass the full payment onto the employer.

All evidence to show in-learning & continuous employment must be presented before payments are made.

Payment to the employer could take up to 2-3 months after the 8 month eligible duration depending on evidence availability.

The payment does not attract VAT.
