From Apprentice to Award Winning Hairdresser

Inspired by her hairdresser mum, Hollie’s passion for hair started when she was in school. She went on to study Level 2 and 3 Hairdressing and Level 2 Barbering with ISA Training. Since completing last year she has rocketed into successful career, owning her own home-based salon and winning Colour Technician of the Year 2022 at the Welsh Hair and Beauty Awards.

More hands-on experience

I did GCSE’s in school, in year 10 and 11 I studied hair and beauty and went to college one day a week. My mum is a hairdresser so I always knew I wanted to be one too. I decided to go down the apprenticeship route as it is much more hands-on.

Busy self-employed stylist

I completed my last apprenticeship about a year ago, since then I have been busy booked out with clients. I work for myself - it's really busy and I work long days but I enjoy it. I worked in quite a few different salons whilst I was an apprentice, but I finished off my training in my own.

Winning at the Welsh Hair and Beauty Awards

Customers recommend you for the award. I was so happy – I didn’t expect to win. I was sat their amongst thousands of people and then they called my name. I had to go up and try to say a speech but I didn’t even know what to say!

Previous winner

ISA hosted some competitions whilst I was doing my apprenticeship. I did Avant Garde in 2017 where I came 1st and again in 2018 where I came 3rd. This really helped develop me as a hairdresser as it gave me a lot of confidence and helped build my skills. It also looked good for my business.

I wouldn’t be where I am without apprenticeships

I would 100% recommend doing an apprenticeship as its more fast-paced and you get so much more experience as you are doing it in a salon. I don’t think I would be in the place I am now, being able to work for myself and having won the award, if I hadn’t gone down the apprenticeship route. I’m hoping to eventually own my own salon and employ my own staff. I’d like people to be able to start their journey off with me.
