Beauty apprentice turned salon angel

Qualified beauty apprentice Jessica Jenkins celebrates her second anniversary at Salon Angels, Caerphilly after completing a Level 2 Beauty Therapy apprenticeship.

Jessica discusses her own learner journey, what she enjoys most about the course and how learning on the job has enabled her to progress onto Level 3 Beauty Therapy – massage.

Better with hands on learning

Initially I stayed on at school to study A levels. I completed AS levels in Criminology, Art and RE before enrolling at college. Unfortunately, Covid disrupted my studies, and I decided the school and college environment was no longer for me.

I am better with hands on learning and pick up new skills a lot quicker through practical working. A lot of people struggle with going to college and having a job on the side. Doing an apprenticeship has allowed me to gain a qualification and earn a wage at the same time.

Talent for nail art

Nails are one of my top treatments. I have a talent for nail art and really enjoy doing them. It’s satisfying to see the result and clients happy.

I enjoy doing skin care treatments and loved learning about skin care while studying Level 2. I like teaching our clients about their own skin type, the benefits of using good skin care and the difference it can make.

Everything is done in the workplace

We complete all practical work and assessments in the salon – everything is done in the workplace. Even my tests are completed in the salon. I have never been good in a test environment and have always struggled. Completing my tests in a quiet room with my assessor makes a huge difference.

To anyone that prefers hands on learning, I would 100% recommend studying an apprenticeship. It has got me where I am today, I’ve enjoyed it every step of the way.

Good luck Jess

We’d like to wish Jessica the best of luck as she continues her Level 3 Beauty Therapy apprenticeship with us at Salon Angels. Find out more about our beauty therapy apprenticeships here.
