The start of a new year brings a fresh wave of enthusiasm, new priorities and the opportunity to reset goals for both your business and the apprentices in your team. After time away, or simply the rhythm of the end of a busy season, apprentices may need a little extra support to feel confident and ready to shine.
At ISA Training, we know apprenticeships are about real-world learning and meaningful development, not just qualifications. Whether your apprentice has been with you for months or is newly onboarded, there are practical ways you can help them settle in, build confidence and contribute fully to your business.
Start the year with a structured welcome back
Coming back after a break, even a short one can be disorienting. A structured welcome back conversation helps your apprentice understand what’s expected in the coming months, and gives them a clear picture of what success looks like in their role.
During this check-in:
- recap their role and responsibilities
- set realistic goals for the next quarter
- revisit their training plan and how it links to salon goals
This simple step creates clarity and sets a positive tone for the year ahead.
Pair them with a supportive colleague
Assigning a mentor or work buddy gives apprentices a friendly face to turn to when questions arise. This partner doesn’t need to be a senior stylist, just someone approachable who can help them navigate daily tasks, answer queries and feel part of the team.
Set up regular, short feedback sessions
Rather than waiting for formal reviews, schedule brief, recurring catch-ups. These sessions are great opportunities to chat about what’s going well, where they’re finding challenges, and what support they might need, whether it’s more time on a particular skill or help with coursework. Consistent communication keeps small uncertainties from becoming bigger worries, and shows your apprentice that you’re invested in their development.
Encourage team connection and belonging
Effective learning happens in environments where people feel they belong. Work to strengthen connections between your apprentice and the rest of your team, whether that’s through shared jobs, collaborative tasks, or informal moments like a team coffee or chat after a shift. Feeling included boosts morale and enhances performance and it’s great for client experience too.
Support their wellbeing and work–life balance
Apprentices are learning on the job and often balancing classroom work, online modules, assessments and practical hands-on work. Supporting them in managing their schedule, especially in a busy salon environment, shows you value their wellbeing. Offer flexibility where possible. Simple things like adjusting task expectations during busy periods can make a huge difference to motivation and confidence.
Everyone thrives on recognition. Celebrating achievements, from mastering a new technique to completing a coursework milestone, helps your apprentice feel seen and valued. A shout-out in a team meeting or a proud moment shared on your social channels can be incredibly encouraging.
Settling an apprentice into a new year is about guidance, consistency and connection, giving them structure, encouraging friendships, and reinforcing that their journey matters. These small, thoughtful actions can improve confidence, skill-building and retention, while helping you grow a talented, committed workforce.
At ISA Training, we pride ourselves on supporting employers and apprentices every step of the way. If you’d like guidance on planning goals, linking training to performance, or enhancing apprenticeship impact in your business, our team is here to help.
