How Jess Allan Advanced Her Career with a Hairdressing Apprenticeship in Wales

Like many in the industry, Jess Allan started her career in hairdressing early, completing her Level 1 and Level 2 hairdressing courses and building a strong foundation in salon skills. Years later, it was her decision to return to learning, which has shaped where she is today.

Returning to learning after COVID-19

After the disruption of the pandemic, Jess decided it was the right time to push herself further. She enrolled on a Level 3 hairdressing apprenticeship with ISA Training, ready to build on her existing skills and grow her confidence.

Going back into education felt different this time. The course introduced more online learning than she had experienced before, which meant adapting to a completely new way of studying. Rather than seeing it as a challenge, Jess embraced it as an opportunity to learn differently and develop new skills beyond the salon floor.

With the support of her Trainer Coach, Jodi Roche, she was able to stay on track and get the most out of her fully funded hairdressing apprenticeship.

Juggling salon life and self-employment

Jess’s working week reflects the modern hairdressing career path. She spends two days a week working at Kate’s unisex salon and offers mobile hairdressing services to her own clients three days a week.

Balancing both salon work and self-employment meant she needed a hairdressing course that worked around her schedule. The flexibility of a free hairdressing apprenticeship gave her exactly that, allowing her to continue earning while gaining new qualifications.

Growing in confidence

Throughout her Level 3 hairdressing apprenticeship, Jess was able to expand her technical ability and confidence. She developed new techniques, refined her existing skills, and gained a deeper understanding of modern hairdressing practices.

She also noticed just how much the industry has evolved since she first started. From updated techniques to new ways of working, the course helped her stay current and inspired by the direction hairdressing is heading.

The benefits of work-based learning

For Jess, one thing is clear, learning on the job makes all the difference. Being in a real salon environment while training gave her consistency and hands-on experience that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom alone.

Working alongside her supportive employer at Kate’s Unisex Salon, she was able to practice new techniques in real time, build confidence with clients, and understand the day-to-day rhythm of the industry.

Jess’s experience shows how a hairdressing apprenticeship in Wales can fit around real people, real schedules, and real ambitions. The combination of practical learning, flexible study, and dedicated support made it possible for her to progress without stepping away from her career.

If you’re considering a free hairdressing course or looking to take the next step in your career, Jess’s story shows that it’s never too late to invest in your future through a hairdressing apprenticeship.
