Our fully funded Level 1 courses in hairdressing, barbering and beauty give you the chance to gain practical experience, build your confidence and get a taster of the career you’re interested in.
You’ll learn in a real working environment, develop skills that employers are looking for and get the support you need to take your next step.
What is Jobs Growth Wales Plus?
JGW+ is a Welsh Government-funded programme designed to help young people develop the skills, experience and confidence they need to move into employment, an apprenticeship or further training. The programme is fully funded, so there is no cost to you or your employer.
Our programme is for 16–18-year-olds living in South Wales who are not currently in education, employment or training.
JGW+ combines practical skills development with real workplace experience. Rather than spending your time in a traditional college environment, you’ll have the opportunity to learn in a salon or barbers, work alongside experienced professionals and get a real feel for the industry. It’s a great way to ease yourself into the world of work if you’re not quite ready to start an apprenticeship or aren’t sure which career path is right for you.
What to expect from a Level 1 qualification
A Level 1 JGW+ qualification gives you the opportunity to learn practical skills while gaining valuable experience in the workplace.
If you choose a hair, beauty or barbering course, you’ll learn in a real salon or barbers environment and have the chance to work with clients. You’ll work alongside industry professionals, giving you an insight into what it’s really like to work in the hair and beauty industry.
You’ll also receive regular one-to-one support from an experienced trainer coach. Your trainer coach will visit you in the workplace to check on your progress, provide support and help you work towards your qualification.
Learning is flexible, with training taking place in the workplace alongside online learning. You’ll have access to Moodle, our online learning platform, where you can access resources to support your course.
JGW+ can also help you with the practical costs of taking part. Learners can receive between £30 and £60 per week depending on the number of hours they work. To receive the full £60, you must work 30 hours per week.
You may also be able to receive a meal allowance of up to £3.90 for lunch and travel support if you need to use public transport.

JGW+ is aimed at those who would like to ease themselves into the world of work. It is for those that have no experience in the sector they would like to enter and want a taster. We offer JGW+ placements in hairdressing, barbering and beauty and can help you progress onto a Level 2 apprenticeship.

What happens after your JGW+ placement?
Completing your JGW+ placement gives you more than a Level 1 qualification. You’ll have gained practical workplace experience, developed new skills and built your confidence in a professional environment. For many learners, JGW+ is the first step towards an apprenticeship.
Once you’ve completed your Level 1 qualification, you can progress onto a Level 2 apprenticeship in your chosen area. This allows you to continue developing your skills, gain a nationally recognised qualification and earn while you learn.
Your JGW+ experience could also lead to an apprenticeship, employment or further training, giving you the skills and experience to start building your career.

Jobs Growth Wales+ is designed for young people aged 16–18 who live in South Wales and are not currently in education, employment or training.
It’s particularly suited to people who want to work but need some extra support, experience or confidence before moving into an apprenticeship or employment.
Yes. Jobs Growth Wales+ is fully funded by the Welsh Government, so there is no cost to you or your employer.

Beauty learners can choose from areas including skincare treatments, day make-up and nail services.
Your JGW+ training will take place in a real workplace, such as a salon or barbers, alongside online learning.

JGW+ can help you progress into an apprenticeship, employment or further training.
Many learners choose to continue onto a Level 2 apprenticeship in hairdressing, barbering or beauty, allowing them to keep developing their practical skills while earning a wage.
