Ease yourself into an apprenticeship with JGW+

Ever wondered what the difference is between an apprenticeship and Jobs Growth Wales Plus?

We caught up with ISA Training Skills Manager Sam Azzopardi to help answer your questions. If you’re unsure what to do and don’t feel college is for you, consider our Level 1 qualifications to get a taster for a career in hair, beauty or barbering.

What is Jobs Growth Wales Plus?

Jobs Growth Wales Plus is a programme for young people aged 16-18 living in South Wales. It is fully funded by the Welsh Government.

Sometimes it can be confused with an apprenticeship, but it is a Level 1 qualification. An apprentice starts at a Level 2 qualification. JGW+ is aimed at those who would like to ease themselves into the world of work. It is for those that have no experience in the sector they would like to enter and want a taster.

We offer JGW+ placements in hairdressing, barbering and beauty and can help you progress onto a Level 2 apprenticeship.

Do I need to study a Level 1 course?

You are not required to study a Level 1 qualification to go straight onto a Level 2 apprenticeship. Our Level 1 qualification is for those who don’t feel confident to start as an apprentice. It is an opportunity to enter the world of work with support from our JGW+ team and trainer coaches.

Deciding to study a Level 1 qualification is an alternative to going to college. You will gain practical, on the job experience directly from the salon. You will develop key knowledge and understanding that will help prepare you for a Level 2 course.

What JGW+ courses do you offer?

JGW+ offer courses in hair, beauty and barbering. You can study a Level 1 in hairdressing and barbering as well as Level 1 in Beauty Therapy. For our Level 1 in Beauty Therapy, you can choose to specialise in facial skin care treatments, day make-up or nail services.

How much do you get paid?

Our learners can receive between £30-£60 a week depending on how many hours they work. To receive the full £60, learners must work a total of 30 hours a week.

Learners will get a half hour break and will receive a meal allowance of £3.90 for lunch while in their placement. They will also receive support with their travel if using public transport.

Where can I get support?

Every JGW+ learner will get one to one support from their trainer coach. Our courses give you confidence in the area that you want to work in. Every learner has access to our online learner platform Moodle, where you can access a range of resources.

Our internal Wellbeing and Safeguarding Officer can also provide you with extra support if you need any further help or guidance. Our courses are flexible around you.
